It was truly shocking when the first Dyson Airwrap was introduced in 2018. The makers of the $400 Supersonic hair dryer upped the ante, charging nearly $600 for a hair tool that claimed to dry and curl or straighten at once. So, is Dyson Airwrap really good? Is it worth the cost? In this article, we’ll explore the Dyson Airwrap for you. Please keep reading.

What Is The Dyson Airwrap?

A multi-styling at-home hair tool, the Dyson Airwrap Complete can produce a variety of looks depending on the attachments (and methods) you employ.

The Airwrap Complete set is offered in the Long version, with attachments made to style hair that is chest length or longer; the Standard version, which is best for people with hair that is shorter than chest length; and the Coily/Curly version, with slightly different attachments (more on this below) that are best suited for styling coil-y or curly hair types.

Dyson Airwrap Multi-styler Overall Design

It is immediately obvious that Dyson chose wisely when redesigning the Airwrap. In addition to the helpful pre-styling dryer, the upgraded barrels, which are the lengthy 1.2- and 1.6-inch curling and styling attachments, make switching between clockwise and counterclockwise directions much simpler than with the previous styler, which required you to completely replace the barrel attachment.

Additionally, the Coanda airflow technology has been greatly enhanced. According to Dyson, “When air is propelled at the proper speed and pressure, it will naturally follow an adjacent surface. This is known as the Coanda phenomenon, and it will entangle nearby air and hair in the process.”

It’s entertaining to watch as hair strands are magnetically drawn to the barrels. You also don’t have to worry about unintentionally burning your fingers or other parts of your body, unlike with conventional curling irons.

How Does The Dyson Airwrap Work?

Given that Dyson is well known for its vacuum industry innovations, it makes sense that the company chose to use a similar air pressure technology when releasing its line of blow-dryers and, later, versatile hair stylers.

The base tool of the Dyson Airwrap Complete houses the Dyson V9 motor, which powers each attachment. The tool differs from a typical blow dryer or styling iron because each attachment uses airflow to style hair.

For instance, even when you’re curling your hair with a barrel, you’ll still hear the motor blowing air.

Why Is Dyson Airwrap Constantly Out Of Stock?

Although it has only recently become a viral sensation, the Dyson Airwrap has actually been in high demand ever since it was introduced in 2018. A six-month waitlist is growing longer as it keeps selling out.

In the beginning of this summer, Dyson introduced a new model of the Airwrap that featured barrels that could curl hair in both directions as well as attachments for long and curly hair. Although it is already sold out, you can sign up for updates on Dyson’s website’s email list.

What’s Included In The Dyson Airwrap Complete?

Some changes in the upgraded Airwrap’s new engineering are visible, while others are not. Here’s what’s new:

Coanda smoothing dryer, also known as rough dry attachment)

The redesigned blow dryer attachment is the main modification. What once looked like a hollow oval reminiscent of Dyson’s signature fan design is now replaced by a cylindrical dryer head that functions both as a blow drying “pre-styler” meant to take hair from wet to damp and a smoothing attachment meant to tuck away flyaways and instantly smooth hair. To switch between the two modalities, the head can be easily rotated.

Direction-changing Airwrap barrels

Four barrels total—two of each size, one for clockwise curls and one for counterclockwise curls—were included with the old Airwrap. However, there are only two curlers in the new Airwrap design.

The new curlers come in a 1.2″ and 1.6″ diameter barrel that you can use for both clockwise and counterclockwise curls by just changing the setting at the cool-touch tip of each curler instead of physically switching.

You can also opt to buy the set with long barrels or short barrels, whereas the original At first, Airwrap was only sold with short barrels.

Improved firm and soft smoothing brushes

The upgrade also includes paddle brushes that have more movement and noticeably stronger suction in what the brand calls “enhanced Hair is drawn to and aligned with greater control by Coanda airflow, resulting in a straighter style.”

Wide-tooth comb

The soft-tipped comb shapes volumize, and stretches hair as it dries and is specifically made for coils and curls.

What Additional Features Does The Brand-new Dyson Airwrap Multi-styler Complete Offer?

It depends on whether you choose the version made for short hair, long hair, or curly hair. The attachments available on the sets for short or long hair are essentially the same, but the long version is designed for hair that’s longer than chest length and has curling barrels that are — you guessed it — longer.

Here’s what comes with the $600 purchase:

  • Coanda smoothing dryer
  • 1.2″ Airwrap barrel (regular or long)
  • 1.6″ Airwrap barrel (regular or long)
  • Soft smoothing brush
  • Firm smoothing brush
  • Round volumizing brush
  • Storage case
  • Filter cleaning brush

Why Does The Dyson Airwrap Cost So Much?

Since I’ve been a beauty editor for more than 20 years, the technology is essentially beyond anything I’ve ever written about. After doing some research, I learned that over 600 different prototypes were created over the course of six years by 200 engineers. I got in touch with one of those engineers and asked a few questions about the gadget.

What Is The Best Way To Maintain A Dyson Airwrap Multi-styler?

A filter brush is included in each kit. Simply remove the shroud from the machine’s bottom, then use the brush to clean the filter. By doing so, you can keep your machine running smoothly and with a strong airflow.

The filter can also be rinsed under warm water and allowed to air dry. Use a damp, warm cloth to clean the barrels from top to bottom. Using your fingers or a comb, remove any hairs from the brushes.

Customers Reviews

  1. I really dislike doing my hair, so getting this tool was the best decision I could have made. Just thinking about spending more than 10 minutes with any tool made me feel tortured, so having a variety of options for doing my hair with minimal effort is a win-win for me. I enjoy creating waves without having to struggle to find the ideal quantity of hair; instead, I simply placed the tool next to the hair and it immediately began gathering the proper quantity.
  2. I adore this so much. It makes styling my hair so enjoyable. After my ex and I broke up, I finally bit the bullet and gave back all of his belongings for Christmas in order to purchase this, which I had been waiting to do for three years. It is totally worthwhile. You will love it!!!!
  3. If you have curly hair, DO NOT purchase. I spent a lot of time watching videos after purchasing the complete airwrap kit in an effort to recreate the curly blowout look I used to achieve with a straightener or heated curlers. It is impossible.

Is It Worthwhile To Buy A Dyson Airwrap?

Regular hot-tool users who only do their hair for special occasions may want to pass because it’s a significant investment. However, if you’re committed to doing your hair at home frequently, this is a holy grail hair tool that I think is the best multi-functional styler available.

It performs all the functions you require, including drying, smoothing, and curling, while ultimately saving you money and room in your bathroom (or wherever you do your hair).

The Bottom Line

I now understand why the Airwrap costs $500 after speaking with a Dyson engineer and learning more about its technology. However, is that expense reasonable?

If you’re hesitant to spend the money, you might want to start with a blowout tool as a less expensive alternative to make sure you’ll benefit from it. Though it might be worthwhile if it fits into your budget.
